Science in KrasSMU

The University is a large scientific medical centre of the Siberian region. The scientific activities are carried out on 68 departments, in the central research laboratory (CRL) and also in the laboratories of integrative anthropology and morphology, biochemistry and cytogenetics established at the university departments. The Academic Council, Coordination Council, problem commissions, dissertation councils and various subdivisions of the University take part in the organization and coordination of the scientific research. The main directions of the scientific activities of KrasSMU agree with the priority directions of the Russian and world development of the medical science, the subject scope being determined by needs of practical health service:

The scientific directions completely correspond to the profile of specialist training and are performed within the frames of 8 federal and 12 regional research programs, including the following programs: "Protection of vision of the Krasnoyarsk territory population", "Anti-AIDS", "Preventive vaccination", "Pulmonology", "Prophylaxis and treatment of arterial hypertension in the Krasnoyarsk territory", "Urgent measures in the fight against tuberculosis in the Krasnoyarsk territory".

Scientific methods and approaches are being constantly improved and brought in correspondence with the development of new technologies of the time. The problem scientific directions are supervised by leading scientists of the University.

KrasSMU carries out great inventory work, renders aid in presenting rationalization proposals, inventions, utility models, counsels patent search. During the last 5 years 112 supposed invention applications and 4 applications for utility models were sent to the Federal institute of industrial property. During these years 60 patents of the RF for invention and 2 certificates of utility models were received.

On the basis of KrasSMU or with its participation as organizer scientific conferences of different levels are constantly conducted. It has become a good tradition to annually carry out the Siberian scientific practical conference on actual problems of pharmacotherapy in cardiology which assembles specialists of not only Siberian region but also of central cities of Russia. There were 182 conferences on various directions in medicine.

Several scientific schools have been established at the University which are well-known in this country and abroad. First of all it is the scientific school "Innovation technologies in the field of social health, health service and social protection in the Krasnoyarsk territory", scientific schools of surgeons, traumatologists-orthopedists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, physiotherapists and balneologists, dermatovenereologists, scientific school of neuro rehabilitation, and also scientific schools on fundamental disciplines: morphology and physiology.

Scientific workings out of the University scientists are presented as the displays at various forums and exhibitions: international, Russian, regional, territorial (Harbin, Brussels, Blumfonnein, Minsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk and others). As exhibits the following elaborations were demonstrated: "Management of the spine diseases with Rodnyansky-Gupalov's endocorrector", "Stabilizing operations on the spine in patients with congenital scoliosis", "Management of the hip joint with the help of endoapparatus", "Management of destructive injuries of the hip joint", "Spinal monitoring in spinal surgery", "Use of spinal monitoring in orthopedics", "Management of spinal diseases and traumas", "Geyser - a device for preparing bathing solutions and their delivery to the operating table", "Management of burn shock", "Methods of preventing dental diseases in children", "Abdominal cavity fenestration technique", "Modern achievements in rehabilitation of patients with cardio-vascular diseases with the help of physical methods", "Author's didactics: methods and forms of bringing up and development of bioethical culture of doctors to be", "Combined immunosuppressive therapy in the management of acquired aplastic anemia in children", "New techniques in ultra-sound diagnostics", "X-ray diagnostics of the colon and rectum diseases in urgent proctology", "X-ray diagnostics of the mammary glands diseases" and many others.

The exhibits presented are awarded with medals and diplomas, 40 of them were received during the last 5 years. In 2004 the prize "Vocation" invested to the best doctors of the Russian Federation was presented to the co-workers of the Department of traumatology, orthopedics and field surgery in the nomination "For development of a new method of treatment" for a unique device for the management of scoliosis in children. The high standard of scientific research of our University is confirmed by the victories in the competitions of grants for conducting researches carried out at different levels: the Russian Foundation for fundamental research, the Russian humanitarian scientific foundation, International grants of Soros foundation and Rotary-club foundation, the Krasnoyarsk territory scientific foundation, and individual grants for participation of scientists and students in medical congresses and forums.

Post-graduate course and doctorate course

State educational institution of higher vocational training KrasSMU of the Ministry of health service and social development is conducting training of highly qualified specialists via Post-graduate course and special doctorate course.

Post-graduate course is the highest form of training scientific and research and educational personnel. The terms of studies are: 3 years in the day-time post-graduate course and 4 years - in the external post-graduate course. The post-graduate courses, on the competitive basis, admit people having higher vocational education, in clinical specialties - ones having not less than 3 years of practical work, and graduates of clinical residency in corresponding specialties on condition of successful final examinations.

KrasSMU is carrying out preparation of post-graduate students in 3 scientific fields:

The abovementioned directions of the post-graduate courses include 37 specialties (Table 1). Scientific supervisors are heads of departments, doctors of sciences, professors. Moreover, training of candidates and doctors of sciences is effectively carried out via competition: practitioners and co-workers are registered at the University for preparation of dissertations under supervision of the scientists of KrasSMU.

During 5 years the co-workers of the University defended 165 dissertations (34 doctoral dissertations and 131 candidate dissertations); in 2007 - 7 doctoral dissertations and 21 candidate dissertations.

There are 3 dissertation councils at the University on 7 specialties: anatomy, surgery, eye diseases, therapy, pediatrics, stomatology, and organization of health service. Thus, competitors of the Siberian region have an opportunity to defend dissertations in the abovementioned specialties in KrasSMU dissertation councils. From 2003 to 2007 competitors defended 285 dissertations, including 26 doctoral dissertations (9.12%) and 259 candidate ones (90.88%).

Training of post-graduate students in KrasSMU is carried out in accordance with "Regulations on training scientific and pedagogical staff in the system of post-graduate professional education in the Russian Federation" (Order of the Ministry of Education Of the Russian Federation of the 27th of March 1998 N814).

General supervision is carried out by pro-rector on scientific work, doctor of medical science, professor M.M.Petrova.

Names and code numbers of specialties in which training in the post-graduate courses of KrasSMU is carried out are listed below:

Entrance to the post-graduate courses is carried out in the terms determined by the Ministry of health service and social development (May - June). For the entrance to the post-graduate courses entrance examination board is established under the chairmanship of the rector. Members of the entrance examination board are appointed by the chairperson from highly qualified research and educational personnel, including scientific supervisors. Those who entered the post-graduate courses have an interview with the supposed supervisor. Staffing of the post-graduate courses is performed on the competitive basis. Entrance to the post-graduate courses is implemented within the limits of control quotas determined by the Ministry of health service and social development of the RF.

Successful preparation of dissertations is guaranteed by thorough choice of candidates for training in the post-graduate courses. As a rule, they are members of students' scientific societies and clinical residents. All dissertations are prepared in accordance with the plan of research work of KrasSMU.

All internal and external post-graduates are taught according to their individual plans approved of by the Academic council of KrasSMU and pro-rector on scientific work. The post-graduate's individual plan is implemented under the control of scientific supervisor who is appointed out of the doctors of medical science. Only in individual cases, on the Academic council's decision, associate professors, candidates of medical science are confirmed as scientific supervisors. At present 67 professors and 8 associate professors are responsible for the work of post-graduate students.

Post-graduate students report about their work on the departmental meetings and faculty academic councils. Moreover, post-graduate students are annually attested by the certifying commissions under the chairmanship of pro-rector on scientific work. The results are shown in the certifying document.

Doctorate course in one field of medicine (14.00.00 medical sciences) including two specialties (14.00.02 human anatomy; 14.00.05 inner diseases) was established in 2004.

In addition to the post-graduate course and the doctorate course preparation of candidate and doctoral dissertations is implemented in the form of competition. At present 28 scientific works compete for doctorate academic degree and 51 - for candidate academic degree. Competitors also go through all the stages of confirmation of individual plans, subjects of dissertation, scientific supervisors and certification.
